ENTREVISTA CON PETER Y ROB DE "MENTALIST"

Hoy en Black Phoenix Rising Tenemos el gusto de entrevistar a los miembros de MENTALIST, la nueva banda del ex batería de Blind Guardian Thomen Stauch; del Youtuber Rob Lundgren quienes unen fuerzas con Florian Hertel al bajo, Kai Stringer y Peter Moog a las guitarras.

Su adictivo y genial álbum debut “Freedom of Speech” fue lanzado “Pride and Joy” a finales de este pasado mes de agosto.

Lo primero de todo ¡Muchas gracias por la entrevista y enhorabuena por este genial disco debut!

 

 

1) Mentalist nace en Alemania en el 2018 por los dos guitarristas (Peter y Kai). ¿Como fue el proceso de creación de la banda y la búsqueda de los demás integrantes?

 

Peter: Hola Rafa. La idea de hacer una banda llamada Mentalist existía varios años antes. Así que fundé Mentalist a principios de 2018 con mi amigo y guitarrista excepcional Kai Stringer. Conocí a Thomen Stauch en una fiesta en 2016. Después de que le preguntasemos a Thomen, él dijo que sí. El bajista Florian Hertel, conocido por nuestras redes, completó la formación instrumental a finales de 2018. La tarea más difícil ahora era encontrar a un buen cantante. Tenemos algunos  en mente. Luego vino mi profesora de canto Rubina (de la banda Systopia) y me recomendó Rob Lundgren. Cuando contactamos a Rob en la primavera de 2019, pudimos entusiasmarlo con la banda y me alegro de haber encontrado nuestra formación final.

Rob: ¡Hola! También puedo agregar que después de que los miembros de la banda fueran elegidos, nos reunimos durante la escritura y grabación de canciones para unirnos y ver cómo se siente la química entre nosotros. ¡La mente abierta y la fuerte visión en la banda es increíble! Las cosas se sienten muy naturales dentro de la banda. Una buena mezcla de tensión dinámica y saludable para generar crecimiento. También estoy muy emocionado de viajar junto con estos grandes amigos y músicos.

 

2) Me consta que el nombre escogido de “Mentalist” se debe a la mascota del grupo que aparece en la portada ¿Quién es este misterioso personaje?

 

Peter: El mentalista apareció de repente y encantó a la banda. Desde entonces hemos estado bajo su hechizo y tenemos que hacer lo que él quiere. No sabemos si el mentalista es bueno o malo. Nos prometió que vendría a nuestros conciertos en vivo de vez en cuando. Entonces, tal vez podamos averiguar más junto con los fanáticos.

Rob: A menudo me despierto con recuerdos de cánticos místicos y melodías oscuras acechando dentro de mis recuerdos. No estoy seguro de dónde viene, entonces recuerdo una figura susurrando ... "Canto a través de ti ..." hmm, ¿qué está pasando?

 

 

3) De hecho la portada (que es uno de los muchos aciertos de este debut) ha sido realizada por nada más y nada menos que Andreas Marschall, una leyenda del mundo de las ilustraciones y portadas de Heavy Metal (Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Kreator, Obituary etc) ¿Como se os ocurrió la idea de contar con él?

Peter: Originalmente diseñé la portada como un dibujo lineal. Contrariamente a mi deseo de usar mi dibujo feo como portada final, la banda recomendó contratar a Andreas Marschall como artista de portada. El contacto llegó a través de Thomen y estamos muy contentos de que haya aceptado el pedido. Y tengo que admitir: su dibujo ha mejorado un poco ...

Rob: Acabo de pensar en algo. Tenemos una versión de demostración del álbum ... Peter, usemos tu dibujo original como portada cuando lancemos ese hallazgo raro.

 

 

 

4) Tanto en la portada con “el mentalista” y los manifestantes con diferentes lugares caracterismos de EEUU, Rusia y Turquía (con vosotros incluidos entre ellos ¡Gran detalle!); como en el videoclip de “Freedom of Press”, se hace una importante crítica al papel que juegan los medios de comunicación en el nuevo orden mundial, del abuso de poder, las “fake news” y la necesidad de pensar colectiva y de forma crítica. ¿Qué mensaje pretendéis lanzar Mentalist con este primer álbum y como banda de Metal en general?

Peter: Tenemos varias canciones con temas serios, pero también algunas canciones que tienen un contenido completamente diferente. Como banda, estamos un poco preocupados por las democracias del mundo. El texto de "Freedom Of The Press" fue escrito en 2017. Estaba preocupado por el rápido aumento de populistas y dictadores en diferentes países y escribí el texto. Simplemente describe "¿Cómo me convierto en un dictador para tontos?" Es posible que la gente de las democracias se haya cansado un poco. La desinformación se comparte muy rápidamente en las redes sociales. Es importante que se cumplan ciertos estándares con los que vivimos en un mundo libre e ilustrado.

5) ¿Sois consientes que hablar de temas sociales-reivindicativos parece que sea espacio reservado única y exclusivamente para el Punk y el Thrash Metal?

Dicho de otro modo: ¿que opináis del corsé impuesto por parte de la prensa y el público de que en el Power Metal solo se deba hablar de dragones, literatura, leyendas, magos y pociones?

Rob: Magos! eh... Mentalist quizás tenga algo que quiera decir en el segundo álbum con respecto a sus hechizos y pociones mágicas. Entregaré el mensaje.

Peter: Cada artista puede y debe escribir sobre temas lo que quiera. Personalmente, me resulta difícil escribir sobre espadas y dragones. Quizás todavía me falta algo de experiencia en la caza de dragones. ¿Quizás un caballero me lleve de excursión y consiga la "cuchara de oro" en la lucha contra los dragones? Como artista, también puedes usar tu responsabilidad. El hecho de que tengamos textos a veces serios genera reacciones positivas y negativas.

 

 

6) Pasemos al sonido de la banda… Yo y mucha gente defiende que el estilo que practicáis es “Power Metal melódico”. ¿Os sentís cómodos con esta “etiqueta?

Peter: Todos ven la música desde su propia percepción. Puedo vivir con cualquier opinión al respecto. En el heavy metal tenemos el lujo de tener muchas etiquetas. La mayoría de las bandas atraviesan diferentes estilos. Desde mi punto de vista puedes encontrar elementos de Heavy Metal clásico, Melodic Metal, Power Metal, pero también Rock y un poco de Prog y Thrash metal en Mentalist.

Rob: Aquí hay otra etiqueta si te cansas de las viejas… “Magic Metal” porque nuestra música es “zim-zala-bimbastic-fantástica !!” Llama a nuestra música como quieras, estaré aquí mientras tanto tocando y cantando mientras piensas en cómo debería llamarse.

 

7)  Para ser más preciso me da la sensación que vuestro sonido “es como si Iron Maiden ficharan al youtuber y cantante de Reveal e hicieran un disco de Power Metal”. De verdad que creo que el trabajo de las guitarras es otra de las grandes bazas de este trabajo y que debéis de seguir por esta línea de guitarras dobladas-armonizadas…

Peter: Las comparaciones con bandas como Iron Maiden son un gran honor. Ciertamente nos han influido y todavía nos queda un largo camino por recorrer e intentar desarrollarnos más. Siempre he sido un gran fan de las melodías de guitarra y también gracias a nuestro excelente segundo guitarrista Kai, las melodías de guitarra juegan un papel importante en nuestra música. Estoy feliz de que tengamos un cantante tan bueno como Rob. El canto es la parte en la que los compositores y guitarristas solo pueden influir indirectamente. Me complació mucho escuchar las primeras grabaciones de Rob en las canciones.

Rob: ¡Gracias Peter! Y estoy de acuerdo. Si la gente escucha a Iron Maiden en nosotros, entonces tenemos un gran punto de partida donde llevar nuestra música más lejos. Esta banda tiene muchas influencias y el 2º álbum ya empieza a brillar de distintas formas. Oh, sí, todavía no has escuchado eso ... Espera ... ¡Se acerca más trabajo de guitarra genial, estos chicos son increíbles!

 

8) El responsable de la mezcla y la masterización ha sido trabajo de Christian “Moschus” Moos. ¿Que ha aportado al disco y como os ha ayudado al resultado final del disco?

Rob: Moschus fue el primer mezclador que influyó en mi selección de equipo durante la grabación de voz en mucho tiempo. Entonces puedo decir que él sabe una o dos cosas al respecto y no puedo estar más feliz con los resultados.

Peter: Moschus (www.spacelab-mixing.com) es un gran tipo. Nos dejó ser nosotros mismos y trató de enfatizar nuestras respectivas fortalezas. La cooperación fue muy agradable.

 

 

 

9) Vamos acabando… ¿De que manera ha afectado vuestros planes la maldita pandemia del covid-19?

 

Peter: Sin Covid probablemente estaríamos haciendo una gira ahora. En su lugar, ya hemos compuesto el segundo álbum. Se espera que se realice una gira en la segunda mitad de 2021.

Rob: Lo bueno de esta banda es que pase lo que pase, siempre nos las arreglamos para sortear obstáculos y sucesos, 2020 ha sido un gran maestro de diferentes maneras, realmente se mostró en este año extraño.

 

10) ¿Tenéis ideas para el segundo disco? ¿Podéis desvelar que línea seguirá?

 

Peter: Las canciones del nuevo álbum ya están compuestas. Actualmente hay nueve canciones. La composición fue muy divertida y toda la banda estuvo involucrada. Hay algunas pistas sobre temas más serios, pero también otras, incluida una canción divertida. Desde mi punto de vista, hemos dado el siguiente paso musicalmente y me gustan mucho las canciones. El álbum será grabado y producido en los próximos meses.

Rob: El siguiente paso de hecho. Aprendí mucho durante el primer álbum y abrió nuevas ideas sobre lo que podemos hacer para el seguimiento. La línea será creativa durante las etapas de prueba sin límites. Echemos lo que queramos en el caldero. Confío plenamente en que sabemos qué funciona y qué no. Es divertido jugar con las ideas locas. ¡¡Mental-is-t-us!!

11) Amigos de Mentalist: muchísimas gracias por vuestra atención, amabilidad y por vuestro sincero amor por la música, la que nos llena tanto especialmente en estos tiempos difíciles como los que estamos pasando. Es genial  además conoceros y sentir vuestras cualidades humanas, además es una gran noticia y alegría para el mundo del Heavy Metal que tengáis al bueno de Rob a las voces y como no, que el gran Thomen esté cabalgando de nuevo tras sus dos bombos infernales en una banda que tiene tanto que decir. Solo queda poner punto y final a esta pandemia para poder veros en directo.

Si queréis dedicar unas palabras a la gente que os sigue de España y del mundo en general… ¡Adelante este es vuestro momento!

INTERVIEW WITH PETER AND ROB OF "MENTALIST"

Today at Black Phoenix Rising We have the pleasure of interviewing Peter and Rob, the members of MENTALIST, the new band of former Blind Guardian drummer Thomen Stauch, Youtuber Rob Lundgren who join forces with Florian Hertel on bass, Kai Stringer and Peter Moog on guitars.

 

Their addictive and great debut album “Freedom of Speech” was released by “Pride and Joy” at the end of this past August.

 

First of all, thank you very much for the interview and congratulations on this great debut album!

 

 

 

1) Mentalist was born in Germany in 2018 by the two guitarists (Peter and Kai). How was the process of creating the band and the search for the other members?

 

Peter: Hello Rafa. The idea to make a band called Mentalist existed several years earlier. So I founded Mentalist at the beginning of 2018 with my long-time friend and exceptional guitarist Kai Stringer. I met Thomen Stauch at a party in 2016. After we asked Thomen, he said yes. Bassist Florian Hertel, who is known from our network, completed the instrumental line-up at the end of 2018. The most difficult task now was a very good singer. We've got a few favorites in mind. Then my singing teacher Rubina (from the band Systopia) came and recommended Rob Lundgren to me. When we contacted Rob in spring 2019, we were able to get him excited about the band and so I'm glad we found our final line-up.

 

Rob: Hi! I can also add, that after the band members were chosen, we have met during song writing and recording to bond and see how the chemistry between us feels. The open-minded yet strong vision in the band is amazing! Things feel very natural within the band. A good blend of dynamic and healthy tension to generate growth. I’m very excited as well to journey together with these great friends and musicians.

 

2) I know that the name chosen "Mentalist" is due to the mascot of the group that appears on the cover. Who is this mysterious character?

 

Peter: The mentalist was suddenly there and enchanted the band. Since then we have been under his spell and have to do what he wants. We don't know whether the mentalist is good or bad. He promised us that he would come to our live concerts every now and then. So maybe we can find out more together with the fans.

 

Rob: I often wake up with memories of mystical chants and dark melodies lurking within my memories. Not sure where it comes from, then I recall a figure whispering… “I sing thru you…” hmm what is going on?

 

 

3) In fact the cover (which is one of the many successes of this debut) has been made by none other than Andreas Marschall, a legend in the world of Heavy Metal illustrations and covers (Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Kreator, Obituary etc). How did you come up with the idea of ​​having him?

 

Peter:  I originally designed the cover as a line drawing. Contrary to my wish to use my ugly drawing as the final cover, the band recommended to hire Andreas Marschall as the cover artist. The contact came through Thomen and we are very happy that he accepted the order. And I have to admit: his drawing has got a little better ...

 

Rob: I just thought of something. We have a demo version of the album… Peter, let’s use your original drawing as cover when we release that rare find.

 

 

 

4) Both on the cover with “the mentalist” and the protesters with different places, characteristics of the US, Russia and Turkey (with you included among them, great detail!); as in the video clip for "Freedom of Press", there is an important criticism of the role played by the media in the new world order, the abuse of power, the "fake news" and the need to think collectively and critically . What message do you intend to send Mentalist with this first album and as a Metal band in general?

 

Peter: We have several songs with serious topics but also a few songs that are about completely different content. As a band we're a little worried about the democracies of the world. The text for Freedom Of The Press was written in 2017. I was concerned about the rapid rise of populists and dictators in different countries and wrote the text. It simply describes "How do I become a dictator for dummies?" The people in the democracies may have gotten a little tired. Disinformation is shared very quickly on social media. It is important that certain standards are met that we live with in an enlightened, free world.

5) Are you aware that talking about social-protest issues seems to be a space reserved solely and exclusively for Punk and Thrash Metal?

In other words: what do you think of the corset imposed by the press and the public that in the Power Metal you should only talk about dragons, literature, legends, wizards and potions?

 

Rob: Wizards ey… The Mentalist maybe have something he want to say on the 2^nd album regarding his magic spells and potions. I’ll deliver the message.

Peter: Every artist can and should write about topics whatever they want. Personally, I find it difficult to write about swords and dragons. Perhaps I still lack some experience in dragon hunting. Maybe a knight will take me on an excursion and I'll get the "golden spoon" in fighting dragons? As an artist you can also use your responsibility. The fact that we have sometimes serious texts generates positive and negative reactions.

 

 

6) Let's move on to the sound of the band… I and many people defend that the style they practice is “melodic Power Metal”. Do you feel comfortable with this “label?

 

Peter: Everyone sees music from their own perception. I can live with any opinion on it. In heavy metal we have the luxury of having many labels. Most of the bands cross different styles. From my point of view you can find elements of classic Heavy Metal, Melodic Metal, Power Metal, but also Rock and a bit of Prog and Thrash metal at Mentalist.

 

Rob: Here is another label if you get tired of the old ones… “Magic Metal” because our music is “zim-zala-bimbastic-fantastic!!” Call our music whatever you want, I will be here in the meantime playing and singing while you think about what it should be called

 

7) To be more precise, I get the feeling that your sound "is as if Iron Maiden signed the youtuber and singer from Reveal and made a Power Metal album". I really think that guitar work is another of the great strengths of this work and that you should follow this line of bent-harmonized guitars ...

 

Peter: Comparisons with bands like Iron Maiden are a great honor. They have certainly influenced us and we still have a very long way to go and try to develop further. I've always been a huge fan of guitar melodies and also thanks to our excellent second guitarist Kai, guitar melodies play a big role in our music. I am happy that we have such a good singer as Rob. The singing is the part that songwriters and guitarists can only influence indirectly. I was very pleased when I heard Rob's first recordings on songs.

 

Rob: Thanks Peter! And I agree. If people hear Iron Maiden in us then we have a great starting point where to take our music further. This band has many influences and the 2^nd album is already starting to shine in different ways. Oh yea, you have not heard that one yet… You just wait… More great guitar work is coming, these guys are awesome!

 

8) The person in charge of mixing and mastering has been the work of Christian “Moschus” Moos. What has he contributed to the album and how has it helped you to the final result of the album?

 

Rob: Moschus was the first mixer to influence my gear selection during the vox recording in a long time. So I can say he knows a thing or two about it and I cannot be happier with the results

 

Peter: Moschus (www.spacelab-mixing.com ) is a great guy. He let us be ourselves and tried to emphasize our respective strengths. The cooperation was very pleasant

 

 

 

9) We are ending ... How has the damn covid-19 pandemic affected your plans?

 

Peter: Without Covid we would probably be playing a tour now. Instead have already composed the second album. A tour will hopefully take place in the second half of 2021.

 

Rob: The cool thing in this band is that whatever happens we always manage to work around obstacles and happenings, 2020 has been a great teacher in different ways it really showed itself in this weird year.

 

10) Do you have ideas for the second album? Can you reveal which line it will follow?

 

Peter: The songs of the new album are already composed. There are currently nine songs. Composition was a lot of fun and the whole band was involved. There are a few tracks on more serious topics, but also others, including a fun song. From my point of view, we have taken the next step musically and I like the songs very much. The album will be recorded and produced in the next few months.

 

Rob: Next step indeed. I learned a lot during the first album and it opened up new ideas for what we can do for the follow up. The line will be a creative one during the test stages without boundaries. Let’s throw in whatever we want in the cauldron. I fully trust that we know what works and what doesn’t. Crazy ideas are fun to play around with. Mental-is-t-us!!

11) Friends of Mentalist: Thank you very much for your attention, kindness and for your sincere love for music, which fills us so much especially in these difficult times as those we are going through. It is also great to meet you and feel your human qualities, it is also great news and joy for the Heavy Metal world that you have good Rob on vocals and of course, that the great Thomen is riding again after his two infernal drums in a band that has so much to say.
